What inspired you to write your memoir?
The late Mrs V.E. Renaud was compelled to record her colourful life as a youg woman in colonial Africa, early last century – for posterity.
About your Book:
In 1918 Vera Renaud and her mother go off to join her father in the heart of darkest Africa, the Belgian Congo. Arriving in Elizabethville, the wide-eyed innocent is attracted to the first dapper young man she meets at a colonial New Year’s ball, and the two are married within months. With mother in tow, the couple joins the Renaud Bros’ family trading store in the wilds of Kasenga, on the banks of the crocodile infested Luapala River. Bringing up a young family with little more than a matted grass shutter between them and the occasional man-eater on the prowl can be a harrowing experience. Not to mention the mosquitoes, soldier ants and other hungry predators … even cannibals! A true life story.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
The author’s grandson, Bruce Alexander Kilgour, was pesonally appointed to publish her lifetime memoirs before her death in 2003, at age 101. After launching his private publishing label, Good Hope Publishing, adverse personal circumstances completely disrupted these plans. Finally, in having re-established a presence in online self-publishing, Bruce retrieved the hardcopy file containing the memoirs, painstakingly recorded in his grandmother’s longhand, and made a full typed transcript. Vera’s letter to him expressly requested the omission of sensitive family information of a personal nature, therefore a major edit was implied. Keen to fulfil his promise to his beloved grandmother, posthumously, Bruce set to work on the project with a will! The result – Bongo Bongo Bongo was published on Amazon and Smashwords during 2013. Bruce is convinced that the book would carry his late grandmother’s wholehearted approval.
How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
A memoir requires intimate knowledge of the subject. This should not be confused with the researching of facts, say for an historical novel. Additional information can however add interest to the subject matter or even endorse it.
But a memoir must mirror the very soul of the writer
Author Bio:
Bruce Alexander Kilgour, as the editor of his grandmother’s life story, is also an author in his own right.
His non-fiction work. “Four Minutes Past Midnight” deals with his paranormal experiences from early childhood to the present. The title derives from the fact that the proverbial doomsday clock will go on ticking BEYOND midnight, as his experiences have shown. Also available at Amazon and Smashwords.
