What inspired you to write your memoir?
Abuse is a lonely place where memories of these times can destroy ones faith in everything and many give up. I survived by hanging on to my dreams and by NEVER GIVIG UP!!
I decided if I could find a way, I would write this book to help others realize they are not alone and that there is hope but they need to get it from within-not elsewhere.
It took me sixteen years to finally write it in a way that would be received without hate, bitterness or blame-no self pity-just my story.
About your Book:
Reflections of Mamie: A Story of Survival
“Reflections of Mamie” is the story of a young girl who spends her entire life searching . . . no, pleading for her mother’s love and approval, but instead receives only physical, mental, and emotional abuse in return. This unsettling tale is more a story of hope as Mamie’s fighting spirit leaves the reader in awe at the young girl who comes to life on the tear-stained pages.”
Her only thought: Never Give Up
Her only Dream: A Family to call her own.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
After making many errors with publishing with my first book, I researched even harder until I found another author willing to share his thoughts on the best publisher and why.
It is published by Lightening Source (LSI) and distributed through various channels. Ingrams, Baker and Taylor, Amazon and available in any book store on special order.
I enrolled in a class with a publishing coach and learned the ins and outs of publishing and was greatly influenced by the others in the class.
How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
Writing a memoir is real, up close and very personal. While you can get close to your characters in a novel, a memoir is life you have lived so there is no second guessing or characters to invent-they are all real.
I think after writing this, it may have been easier to write a fiction because it’s make believe and you have no regrets, no sad memories and no one that can be hurt.
Author Bio:
I am an author, speaker, dreamer and traveler. My book was released January 2012, with its debut at the Seattle Gift Show January 13th and again to be on August 11th, 2012.
My husband, Douglas Adkins and I live in Bremerton, Washington where we raised our daughter, Kecia Adkins Doke who currently lives with her wonderful husband in Denver, Colorado. Living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and loving it here where you can walk miles along natural beaches and watch the changes along the coastline have given me insight of what my dreams truly are and enable me the internal peace to see them through.
It seems that I have found an amazing source of energy that I want to use writing every minute of my day. For me, it has been a life long dream. My book: “Extraordinary Dreams of an Ireland Traveler” is about how the trip came to be, the long road of planning the perfect vacation as a tribute for my husband and a review with an in-depth look at each location visited in the three weeks in Ireland. I also write a couple of human interest stories that we found along the way and how one of them has changed our lives.
My hobbies are not many-I love to quilt but mostly write.
I am currently spending my time marketing my new book “Reflections of Mamie-A Story of Survival.
