What inspired you to write your memoir?
This actually a novel. But it’s centred around a (fictitous) memoir supposedly written by Emma Darwin, wife of the great Charles. I wrote it after reading the magnificent and moving biography of Emma Darwin written by Edna Healy. I was first going to write a play about her, but then decided it was far too big a subject for the stage!

About your Book:
Emma’s journal recounts her extraordinary domestic life with Charles, in which she bore him ten children, ran his large household, nursed him through a lifetime’s sickness, and through it all edited his gigantic volume of scientific work whilst at the same time praying for his heathen soul since she was a devout Christian. The novel concerns a modern day detective search for this secret journal which has never been revealed because of its contentious nature.

How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
The voice has to be right. Intimate, personal, revealing of the inner life.
