What inspired you to write your memoir?
With an increasingly ageing population, almost everyone has or will have experience of someone with dementia, in its various forms. It’s heart-breaking, but at the same time, it has its funny moments. Uprooting a nearly ninety-year-old parent from the UK and taking them to France seemed crazy to some people, but our attempts to do it led to some real hilarity and some very touching moments, which I thought it would be good to share.
About your Book:
What happens when dementia, depressed dipsomania and downright dottiness decide to uproot from the UK and move to France together. Worried by the lack of care for her frail elderly mother in the UK, Tottie decides a new life elsewhere might be the answer. Sell the Pig is a travel tale with a twist, describing with alternating humour and poignancy how a somewhat dysfunctional family decide to uproot and move to rural France. Eccentric Tottie, her manic depressive alcoholic brother, their mother, whose dementia has given her an obsession with bums, and an equally elderly border collie, decide France’s Auvergne is to be their new home. This is the story of what led them to make that journey.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
Lots of people on social media were so interested in my tweets and Facebook postings about moving to France with Mother, I thought I would share the story with a wider audience. I simply don’t have the patience to go down the conventional publishing route – I tried sending out letters, with sae’s and didn’t even get the courtesy of a reply from most publishers – so as self-publishing seemed simple enough even for me, I went down that route.
I’ve just completed the sequel to ‘Sell the Pig’, called ‘Is That Billinge Lump?’ and have placed that with Ant Press publishers, as they have such great experience of reaching a wider market than I have achieved on my own with ‘Sell the Pig’. They are publishing the sequel, hopefully at the end of August 2013.
How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
Probably much easier, as you probably already have all the material you need, if you have a good memory or keep a diary.
