What inspired you to write your memoir?
I have led a rough and at times terrifying life. When I was 16, I decided I was not going to live that way any longer and changed my life. It took me years, but have finally reached middle class status.
About your Book:
Imagine if one of your first memories was of your dad shooting the family dog, or of him beating your mom with a coffee table. Go on then to a brain injury that nearly kills you, a heroin addiction, several stays in psychiatric hospitals, homelessness and the deaths of both your first love and first child and you have the first sixteen years of Bill Alton’s life.
The world is kind to many as they grow up. They become successful, law-abiding citizens out to live the American dream. Then, there’s Bill. Having dealt with a troubled child hood, including police officers, troubled parents, and death, Bill grows up in a different world from the rest of society. Bill explains his life in this memoir of nature versus nurture.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
I spent years writing the book and when I finally got it finished and had a few friends read it, everyone said that it was a story in need of telling. I received many, many rejections and finally Scribbcrib Publishing offered to publish it. I figured, maybe this is my chance and went with it.
How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
Writing a memoir is telling stories that may or may not have endings. Life goes on. When the book ends is not when the story ends. Fiction and poetry on the other hand, have definite beginning, middles and endings.
