What inspired you to write your memoir?
A confluence of hapless events during my childhood and the courageous example of my mom inspired me to write my coming-of-age memoir in order to unravel the meaning of closure.
About your Book:
For readers of Frank McCourt, Jeanette Walls, and Mitch Albom who are fans of Angela’s Ashes, The Glass Castle and Tuesdays With Morrie comes a memoir of consequence called DOG WATER FREE by debut author Michael Jay.
Meet Joe Black meets The Wonder Years in this true coming-of-age adventure that lands a dumbstruck orphan from the unlikely side of Detroit front and center before England’s Queen, America’s Maestro, and the first non-Italian Pontiff in more than 400 years.
Mikee is eleven when his world turns upside down as his mom shares news from her doctor.
She has a year to prepare her family for her death.
Her passing will leave the man she loves and the four children she cherishes alone to fend for themselves.
“At least you’ll always have your dad,” she comforts.
Still on her mission fifteen months later, her focus heightens when her husband drops dead.
With that, Mikee’s improbable adventure begins.
Now, standing alone on a funeral home landing, he is shaking like some
lame little imp is dancing a jig atop a grave that’s somewhere in his
own future.
His dad is dead.
His puppy has been put down and buried.
And tonight his mom is lying lifeless on a heavy steel gurney in a dark lonesome
recess of the basement below.
With all that he’s feeling, he wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he woke
up dead tomorrow too.
Might as well join the party, he figures.
Whatever.
He’s ready.
He thinks.
He can’t stop obsessing.
You do wake up after you die, don’t ya?
Jesus, Mikee.
Settle, already.

How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
Unlike works of free-flowing fiction, writing a memoir requires that you figure out how to establish trust so that your readers will have no doubt what they are reading is true. That is why you cannot exaggerate. You must avoid ranting – no vendettas to settle personal scores with mere mortals. Settling your differences with the Almighty, however, is noble and worthy of effort, I think.
Author Bio:
Michael Jay grew up in the heart of Detroit’s Westside. He earned his BA at Harvard and his MBA at Northeastern University in 1983. His coming-of-age memoir, DOG WATER FREE, is dedicated to his college roommate, Tom Wales, who plays a pivotal role in his story, and who many believe to be the only Federal Prosecutor in U.S. history to have been killed in the line of duty. A $1 million reward from the U.S. Department of Justice has gone unclaimed.
Michael lives in Idaho USA.
