What inspired you to write your memoir?
I grew up in Southeast Alaska after age 6. When I would tell people stories of how we lived and how different things were from the states (Alaska was still a territory) they would always want to hear more and asked if I had written these stories down. So I began writing separate stories and it became a book.
About your Book:
My family, two brothers and my parents, left for Alaska in 1952 – because my dad wanted to be a commercial fisherman. We lived first on a 20 foot fishing boat – all of us, then in the autumn we moved into a house in Kalinen Bay so my dad could be the winter watchman there. Our mom taught us correspondence school. We moved the next year to Killisnoo, near Angoon – and our adventures continues. We saw wild animals, dead whales, had accidents and lived through boats burning up.
This is the story of my adventures, along with my older and younger brother – of moving to town and learning all about the things that were there, that had not been in the fishing villages. I learned about elevators, libraries, barber shops and hotels – as well as meeting the people of town who looked out for us. Public school was a new thing – and I loved it.
This is the story of a little girl and all she discovered in a different land, after leaving California.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
After many attempts at finding a publisher or an agent, and always being told that “this is a good book and needs to be published, just not by us”, I came upon Create Space and decided that was the way to go. The guidelines are easy to follow and tech help is there if you need it. It was a great experience all the way through
How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
With memoirs you don’t need a story line – your life is the story line. The “plot” of a memoir is only the suspense that might build about certain true incidents, such as accidents, or surprises.
Author Bio:
I was born in Sacramento, California – living in nearby small towns until I was 6, when our family moved to Southeast Alaska (the islands that run down along the western edge of Canada). I lived in Sitka all through school, starting with 4th grade and later was married and our first daughter was born in Alaska. Since then we have lived in Texas (twice), Wisconsin, central California, northern California, Kansas, southern California and then back to northern California – and finally to Bellingham, Washington, where we have retired. We live near two of our grandsons and visit our youngest grandson in West Virginia as often as we can.
